IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Sypha Belnades
Canon: Castlevania (Netflix)
Canon Point: Post arrival in Targoviste, Season 4
Background:

Blessed be the fandom wiki

Suitability:

In many ways Sypha serves as the ‘heart’ of whatever group she ends up joining. She’s extremely emotive, socially outgoing, and endlessly compassionate, so she’ll have no issue blind tagging characters she’s never interacted with. She’s also a nosy parker and a magical nerd of the highest order. Presented with an arcane mystery like the Singularity, she would immediately hyperfocus on trying to crack its secrets. In her own canon, she’s becoming more sensitive to the political machinations that sometimes drive scholarly pursuits, so she’s also likely to snoop around to learn more about the political landscape and the motivations behind the three factions. Plus, she has some canon mates already in the game, and her perspective is likely to be shaped by their prior experiences.

Powers:

If you were to rank Team Castlevania in terms of destructive potential, Sypha’s elemental magics would top the chart. Alucard is superhumanly fast, strong, indestructible, and capable of fancy shapeshifting tricks, while Trevor’s a skilled fighter with the power of God and Anime The Narrative Hero on his side. Sypha is the glass canon of the team, less physically durable but able to harness fire, ice, wind, and lightning magics to devastating (and creative) effect. Whether she's bisecting vampires with razor-thin wheels of ice, jet packing around with spouts of flame, or dealing massive AOE lightning damage, she’s got some elemental trick for most situations. Luckily, Speakers generally do not wield their magic against mankind, unless in self defense or the defense of innocents. Most of her violence has been aimed at Night Creatures and other members of Dracula's army.

She’s also fluent in several languages, has an eidetic memory, and will absolutely choose the worst possible moment to remind you of that embarrassing thing you said at a a formal dinner six years ago, Proving that there's a loophole in every vow of nonviolence.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Following the defeat of Dracula, Sypha committed herself to dismantling the rest of his army. She and Trevor set out to do just that, while Alucard opted to safeguard Dracula’s Castle, the Belmont Hold, and all the extremely dangerous knowledge/magic stored in both. And for a while, things were good! Sypha and Trevor made a killer team, they were saving lives and cleaning up the countryside, making a real difference! It was everything she dreamed of when she chafed at the limitations of her previous life with her caravan.

Then the trail of Dracula’s minions took them to Lindenfeld, where the town’s Judge asked for their help sorting out a nearby cult. Although the Judge was ultimately right to suspect the monks (they’d taken up Dracula-worship and contrived a ritual to resurrect him using the sacrifice of the entire town, as one does), he turned out to be a different sort of monster entirely; a serial killer preying on local children.

The events at Lindenfeld shook Sypha in more ways than one: she wasn’t able to grasp the true intent of the monks’ ritual until it was too late, when she’s supposed to be the expert on magical threats; she failed to look beyond the Judge’s authority and role, believing him to be a good person simply because he opposed one type of evil; she let a black-and-white view of the world blind her to the truth of the situation, and hundreds of people died as a result.

Guilt and uncertainty gnaw at her, now. She questions her gut, allows suspicion to color her perception of others, and searches desperately for the moral clarity she used to enjoy. Is it right to defend monsters from other, worse, monsters? Is her vow of nonviolence towards humans worth anything when they bring more death and destruction on one another as any demon? She’s muddling her way through a philosophical growth spurt, with only Trevor's cynicism for company, and she’s not thrilled about it.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

“I am a Speaker, and a scholar of magic. I serve no demon, and do no evil.”

“Oh yes, the Speakers are the enemy of God. We live in cooperation, and hide our stories inside ourselves, so he cannot strike them down in jealousy.”

Generally, Sypha’s people are altruistic idealists who prioritize the collection, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge so as to improve mankind’s quality of life. They often act as a kind of early Relief International organization, providing medical aid, resources, and magical assistance to other communities in crisis. Instead of abiding by the code set by God or His Church, they hold history and information most sacred, and tend towards pacifism.

While Sypha gets emotional about community service, and goes absolutely feral over a rare book or presumed-lost bit of knowledge, her commitment to peace and upholding order is lip service at best. See, she did the math on the whole ‘serve no demon, do no evil, but give God the middle finger at every opportunity’ contradiction and decided to simply become ungovernable. She lets her (very large and compassionate) heart make the rules, backed up by her frankly absurd talent for elemental magic. Ultimately she seeks to protect the innocent, correct misinformation, and tear down established systems that prevent people from seeking happiness on their own terms...whether or not anybody asks her to get involved.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

While Sypha herself is a smarty pants who seeks out intelligence, wit, and learning in her companions, she’s the product of a close-knit culture of perpetual outsiders who survive by relying on one another. She therefore values people who look out for others, who have some kernel of selflessness, and who use whatever skills they may have for the good of the group. She will always lean in to help someone trying their best, and always oppose those who hoard or withhold their resources and talents. She’s also very drawn to teachers, and people who demonstrate enthusiasm for niche special interests or hobbies. Nerds are hot, okay.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Sypha would never admit to having flaws aloud - she’s learned that women who admit weaknesses to the world are never allowed to forget or outgrow them. She’ll confidently bluster on about this or that fact or story or bit of ancestral wisdom. After all, she’s legitimately very clever, and false modesty never got anybody anywhere.

The truth is, much of that knowledge is academic. Theoretical. Her lived experience is pretty limited; she grew up in a very insular nomadic culture, often interacting with townsfolk to provide aid and gain information, but never really accepted by them. She doesn’t always understand why people outside the Speakers are the way they are, which can lead to some huge oversights in anticipating the way they behave. She’s idealistic and frankly still a little naive, and while she wants to continue believing the best of people, she’s been manipulated and tricked enough times to feel…well, stupid. Recently she’s begun to wonder if that’s something she should cut out of herself for survival’s sake. Would that be a betrayal of her people’s ideals? Or is it simply putting aside childish things? Sypha doesn’t know, and there’s no one in her life she feels she can ask right now, so the thought festers.

What is their sign, and why?

The Tower. Speakers as a whole value constancy and consistency, but Sypha brings chaos and change wherever she goes. She challenges traditions when they no longer serve the people, has spearheaded cultural change within her own tribe, and has stepped away from the comforting status quo of caravan life to do the most good. She’s also sharply insightful and emotionally intelligent enough to be effective at guiding others, when she’s not tangled up in her own pursuits.
